What Surrogate Cost Can Be Expected?

The process of surrogate motherhood is one in which a woman will bear a child for another couple who is usually infertile. Two kinds of surrogate motherhood exist. In a traditional surrogacy situation, the mother is inseminated artificially with the father's sperm or, if he is infertile, sperm from a donor. The surrogate cost will be covered shortly.

In gestational surrogacy, the father's sperm, or that of a donor, is taken and the egg is harvested from the mother. Couples told no one - not family, friends, or even the children themselves - that sperm from a donor was used. This maintained the fiction of biological paternity.

In 1976, Noel Keane, who was a lawyer, drew up the first formal agreement with a surrogate mother and a couple in the United States. Surrogacy then began to be marketed as a viable solution to female infertility. Brokers then came upon the scene and hired women to become pregnant by way of artificial insemination with the husband's sperm of the infertile woman.

The use of gestational surrogacy have actually increased since the 1980's due to technological advances. As this process has become more common, the number of Asian American, Latin American and African American surrogates has risen.

The Center for Surrogate Parenting, also known as CSP, estimates surrogate cost at $56,525 for traditional surrogacy when artificial insemination is used. If the egg of another woman is used the surrogate cost rises to $69,325.

Here is the breakdown of surrogate cost. The surrogate is paid about $15,000 of the above fees for the sacrifice and time of the pregnancy. In the mid-1970's, when surrogacy agreements first surfaced, no surrogate cost was involved.

During the stage of contract negotiations between the surrogate and the couple wanting a baby, surrogate cost is something that should be agreed upon by all parties. It usually depends upon what the surrogate wants. Some surrogates may wish to get a lump sum at the end of the pregnancy since the surrogate feels like more. Others wish to be paid on a monthly basis. Still others want the surrogate cost to begin right away, or within two weeks, upon the confirmation that the surrogate is pregnant.

It is always a good and wise decision - no matter how the surrogate is going to be paid - to have the surrogate cost in an escrow account. In this way, there should have to be no discussion of financial matters during the pregnancy of the surrogate so that all parties are able to focus all of their energies on the relationship as well as the pregnancy.
